Platform screen door sensors are used to secure the hazardous area between the platform screen door and the train. The increasing automation of train vehicles has led to a greater need to secure the dangerous areas of the platforms. Thanks to safety sensors, it is possible to accurately monitor the three-dimensional zone between the train doors and the platform in order to increase user safety.

MTR Hong Kong has chosen a laser sensor–based platform screen door system for the East Rail Line to provide more robust passenger safety.

Since 2023, MTR Hong Kong has been progressively installing the new laser-powered platform screen door system on the East Rail Line to safeguard passengers more efficiently. Over 3,000 units have been installed to date. The new-generation laser sensors are unaffected by weather and can operate under various lighting conditions and across different platform designs.
